Sumi Brush

Ok, so calling this brush 'Sumi' probably is a misnomer. Real Sumi brushes are more solid and have more of an ink wash look. But this is a big brush with lots of brushy detail.

I enjoy doing loose sketching with this brush on my Tablet PC from life (particularly on the train home). It has a lot of variation and discourages a lot of overworking of the illustration. Just focus on your subject and get into the Zen of the brush.

That being said, if you screw up I have also included a Sumi Eraser in this set so you can remove while still retaining the overall quality of the brush. I prefer to use it very sparingly, but I am sure you will find your own technique.

  1. Beautiful Brush!

Hey, I have a drawing I did with your Stumpy Pencil... which is a great drawing brush... thanks so much for making it! How can I send my sketch to you?

    Cheers!

  3. Sumi brushes were created for the traditional painting techniques from Japan and the Far East, images Sumi. Sumi brushes have become popular with artists for the breakdown of water and fine lines, while hake brush is used like a lot of money box.

  5. I'm having trouble importing the brush - I did everything you said in the instructions, and I even tried extracting the file directly to my "Tools" folder, but it's not showing up when I select "Load Tool Presets," even when I look in Downloads. My copy of Photoshop seems to think the tool doesn't exist! Help?

  6. Hey there! Beautiful brush, but I can't get it to work! I've extracted the file to both my downloads and directly to Tools, but either way it's not showing up when I clicked "Load Tool Presets." I have CS5, so would that be a problem? Any help would be welcome!

  8. hi there, your brush is fantastic! but when I open it and try to import it into my presets (I'm on a Mac, by the way), it opens with my Stickies application instead! The file type is a .tpl, and I've never seen this type before so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
